Regain control of firewalls

Regain control of firewalls

Information today is one of the most valuable resources requiring robust protection. However, even the most advanced equipment cannot guarantee absolute data security. Technical glitches, unexpected failures, or human error can lead to partial or complete loss of crucial information. Such situations present a serious challenge for any organization, and are particularly critical for government institutions where each incident can have significant national implications.

Client - Goverment Electronic Service

Objective:

The project aimed to address two main tasks:

  1. Restoring Control over Network Screens:

    • Develop and implement a solution to recover lost configurations of network screens and ensure full functionality of the management system is restored.
  2. Deploying a Secure Remote Access System:

    • Create and deploy a new system to ensure secure remote access to the system.

Successful completion of these tasks required the involvement of a specialist with the necessary technical expertise and experience. The network department expert from ALESTA, who not only possesses programming skills but also has hands-on experience with network equipment, was able to effectively tackle all challenges. Their expertise was crucial to the successful execution of the project and meeting all client requirements.

Project roadmap:

  1. Network Screen Configuration Analysis: Thorough examination of existing configurations to determine the scope of recovery needed.
  2. Recovery Scope Agreement: Defining the exact scope of configurations for recovery.
  3. Software Development: Creation of new specialized software for analyzing and restoring configurations from network devices.
  4. Virtual Environment Pilot Testing: Testing the developed software on a test bench to verify its functionality before implementation.
  5. New Management System Deployment: Implementing the new management system with recovered configurations based on the developed software.
  6. Client Site Pilot Testing: Testing the new solution on replacement equipment in the client's real environment.
  7. Error Correction: Resolving identified issues post-pilot testing to ensure smooth operation.
  8. Connection of Production Network Screens: Connecting production network screens to the new management system with recovered configurations.
  9. Testing and Support: Conducting trial operation of the new system and providing support to the client during the initial days post-implementation.

The project's success was achieved by effectively overcoming several significant challenges that arose at various stages:

  • Lack of Reverse Engineering Tools: During the configuration analysis and software development phases, the team encountered a shortage of ready-made reverse engineering tools, even from the manufacturer's support center.
  • Limited Technological Window: During the deployment of the new management system, it was necessary to minimize the duration of the technological switch to avoid prolonged downtime.
  • High Cost of Errors: Any error could have severe repercussions for the client's business processes, requiring meticulous attention to detail at every stage of implementation.

Timely resolution of these challenges and the precise selection of specialists not only allowed for prompt resolution of the client’s issue but also provided invaluable experience that can benefit other companies in similar situations.
